La Haine:Attitudes towards poverty, are represented in many different ways throughout the films i have studied. For example in La Haine, Saïd and Vinz go to Hubert's gym to see it has been burnt down by rioters and yet we see Hubert using a punching bag and making no obvious steps toward fixing his gym. This portrays them as having no motivation or money to fix hings in their lives, representing their poverty and also referencing the context of the riots going on in France in the 1990's. The beginning scene of La Haine is filmed from a low angle shouting at Vinz's sister surrounded by high rise flats. This not only shows us that Saïd doesn't care about disrupting others with his noise but the mise-en-scene visually represents how the group (Saïd, Vinz and Hubert) are trapped and looked down upon due to where they live, this is shown by Saïd being surrounded by these flats and therefore trapped and then the low angle represents Saïd as being beneath everyone else due to his poverty.
Again filmed at a low angle is the scene when the group are sat in the playground. This scene is pivotal in showing the way these young adults are represented and perceived by the media. They are surrounded by gates and shown as if they are animals in a zoo, this dehumanizes the three men.
-burnt down gym, chilling on top of the building represents them having nothing to do, no job just lazing around. underclass.
- train Saïd looks down on the people begging despite the fact that he has little himself.
-gallery : stereotyped cause they are dressed less wealthy
'projects' on the outskirts of Paris for ethnic minority groups, who were 'assimilated' into french society, with no opportunity for work or progression as they were promised.
City of God:
In City of God, poverty is also represented in many ways however it is predominantly shown in the escalation into the drug industry as a way to get money. Almost all of the characters except Rocket get wrapped up in the drugs trade as a way to get money and earn a living, however because of the favela they are living in being so poor, they often have nothing to spend their money on. For example, Benny send's Carrot out of the slum to buy him clothes and gives him and extensive amount of money because he simply does not know the cost of the outside world. The very powerful and prominent drug business in City of God accurately represents the real favelas of Rio De Janeiro as the same amount of people are employed in the drug business as there are holding down normal jobs.
Favela's constructed for the poor on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, the result of marginalisation of social groups and the inability of the government to deal with issues of poverty and housing.
Chungking Express:
